Studio Project Fall 2022
Lunar Greenhouse
This lunar greenhouse explores sustainable food production solutions for future lunar colonies. and is designed to address the unique challenges of the moon’s environment. This design supports plant growth in low-gravity conditions by utilizing descending circular hydroponic rings with continually circulated water. The dome which is designed to rest above the surface of the moon mimicks the surrounding environment providing light and protection to the interior.
Details
Advanced systems ensure efficient water circulation, preventing stagnation and waste. Water is pumped down through pipes, minimizing gravity’s effects, and then cycled back up for reuse. By watering from below, plants absorb only the necessary amount of water, reducing evaporation and maintaining a stable greenhouse atmosphere. The greenhouse utilizes purple growing lights to supplement the limited lunar light, ensuring optimal plant growth.
The moon greenhouse features a combination of central elevators and ladder rungs, ensuring easy access to all levels for both viewing and maintenance. Its dome shape offers protection from lunar storms and potential asteroid impacts. The design follows principles of biomimicry, incorporating “crater-like” windows that maximize light intake and provide views of the lunar landscape, fostering a connection to the surroundings. This connection is crucial for the mental well-being of lunar settlers, offering a sense of familiarity and comfort.
